This vehicle was designed to convey the founder's vision to investors. He wanted to show an ultra- efficient vehicle at highway speeds, while also giving the occupant a commanding view of the road in slower urban settings. To park the AERO pod folded up so 4 could fit in a normal parking space.
I was tasked with creating a mechanism to open and close the canopy, and move the seat forward and backward automatically.
To realize the canopy vision I created a mechanism that nested in complex surfaces of the greenhouse and was driven by a cable system and Geared down stepper motor.
To move the seat I used two linear actuators to drive a four bar mechanism inside the vehicle to translate and rotate the seat and maintain an ergonomic seating position. Over the course of its travel the seating position changed from a race car seat height (H30~100 mm) to a large SUV (H30~300mm)
I partnered with the Industrial Designer to create a minimalist UI and control scheme for the autonomous pod. The seat was the occupants only constant frame of reference in the vehicle, so we integrated all the necessary controls and information into the black walnut and brushed aluminum armrests next to a leather cushion.
